The Frugal Handbook #3: Picking Up Money

Ever since circuit breaker last year, almost everyone has used a food delivery service at least once.

They’re super convenient and allow you to enjoy your meal/dessert/drink in the comfort of your own home without having to leave your house.

However, that’s not all that food delivery services are good for.

They can also be useful when you’re already out of the house and intend to dabao some food, bubble tea, or dessert home.

Many such services have a self pick-up option, where instead of having the items delivered to you, you pick them up at the store directly.

The incentive for doing so is that you may be able to enjoy special discounts. Specifically, foodpanda usually offers a 15% discount for self pick-up orders.

Although this defeats the purpose of using a food delivery service, if you’re already out of the house, this is a practical option.

In addition to the 15% discount, you can also purchase foodpanda discount vouchers on e-commerce sites like Shopee to further offset your purchase.

Currently, Shopee sells foodpanda vouchers in fixed denominations at 10% off, like the one below, and you may get them at further discounts during occasional flash sales.

This means that you potentially get to save up to 25% off your total order – not too bad even after any inflated platform prices, and this may very well be cheaper than buying directly from the store.

On top of saving money, placing self pick-up orders also allows you to skip the queue and save time.

While the entire process may sound like a hassle, it doesn’t take much time and effort.

I’ve done this many times and to me, the money + time savings are usually worth it!

Try out this hack the next time you dabao a meal, drink, or dessert and let me know what you think!
